Turquoise Coast
(GUIDED TOURS CODE TC)
We begin this tour of the Turkish Turquoise Coast and ancient Lycia in the Mediterranean city of Antalya, staying in the old part of the city in a renovated Ottoman House with pool, our base for the archaeological sites of ancient Pamphyllia. Aspendos, Perge and Side are particularly important. On the third day we drive west into ancient Lycia.
We visit the mountain top ruins of Termessos which Alexander found too remote to conquer, before returning to the coast to stay on the beach near Olympos. Nearby we find the Chimera, a mountain side with perpetual natural fire.
Phaselis is a remarkable Roman port visited by the Emperor Hadrian before staying at Ucagiz near Kale Simena. From there we to explore the ruins of the sunken city of Kale in the Gulf of Kekova in a glass bottomed boat. From our next base in the bustling seaside town of Kas we find Myra, the bishopric of St Nicholas. Travelling up into the mountains behind Kas we visit the lesser known but spectacular mountain-side city of Arykanda. Lunch is in Elmali, a glimpse of the real unspoilt old Turkey.
Kalkan is our base for a trip for the day in a boat for total relaxation. Our drive along the Seven Capes takes us high above the sea to a converted water mill with the picturesque Olu Deniz and its famous turquoise lagoon and Butterfly valley far below.
The next day is spent relaxing in the grounds of the 'eco hotel.' In the evening we continue on to Dalyan to a little pansiyon on the river from whence we take a tour up the river to the mud baths in Lake Koycegiz and back to the 7 kilometre sandy beach and ancient Kaunos. In the evening we board a gulet at Gocek for a three day Blue Cruise along the glorious Lycian coast. Dalaman airport is a mere 20 minutes away for our return to UK
